Installation and setup

Downloading Power BI Desktop

Description: Power BI Desktop is the primary authoring tool for data analysts. It is a free application that you install on your local computer, serving as the central workspace where you connect to data, create sophisticated models, and design interactive reports.

Why: Beginners start in the Desktop version because it offers the most robust environment for the "heavy lifting" of data work. While the Power BI Service (web version) is great for viewing, the Desktop version provides full control over data transformation and complex modeling before you share your finished reports with others.

Installation Steps

Follow these steps to set up your development environment on a Windows machine:

  1. Visit the Source: Navigate to the official Microsoft Power BI website or the Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Download: Choose Power BI Desktop. You can choose the "Advanced Download Options" if you need a specific language or bit-version (64-bit is recommended).
  3. Run the Installer: Open the downloaded file and follow the setup wizard.
  4. Launch: Once installed, open the application to see the "Getting Started" splash screen.

Initial Workflow Example

To get familiar with the interface, your first task should involve the following sequence:

Example Project:

  • Get Data: Click the "Get Data" icon and select an Excel workbook containing sales figures.
  • Transform: Use the Power Query editor to ensure your "Date" and "Revenue" columns are formatted correctly.
  • Visualize: Drag a "Sales Amount" field onto the report canvas and choose a Clustered Column Chart to see your first visual.

Key Notes

  • System Requirements: Power BI Desktop requires a Windows operating system. Mac users typically run it via a virtual machine or use the Power BI Service for limited editing.
  • Monthly Updates: Microsoft releases a new version of Power BI Desktop every month. It is a best practice to update regularly to access new features and security patches.
  • Sign-In: You do not need to sign in to use the Desktop version for creating reports, but you will need a Power BI account when you are ready to "Publish" your report to the cloud.
